The Dogwoods

Listen on:
Hope and heartache, tangled together. Fingerstyle guitar, indie production, layers of light and storm. Musically these songs may evoke Nick Drake, Damien Jurado or Beck, and are for anyone who’s ever tried to build a new day out of broken pieces.
Songwriting, singing, performance and production by Joe Larson. Mastered by Mazereth Studios. Artwork by Salina Larson.
THE DOGWOODS
The dogwoods all are blooming everywhere they grow
But thunderheads are looming everywhere you go
Reminds me of the blizzard the winter you were born
And since then little sister you never could stay warm
I hear your voice is quaking through the static on the line
I hear the troubled truths you speak
I know how they’ve hung above you for a long, long time
You and I we don’t believe in some great master plan
Someone who’ll fix it perfectly if we just fold our hands
But I believe in people, and I believe in you
I’ve watched you fight this darkness you’re a warrior it’s true
And just beyond those heavy clouds I know you’re gonna find
A sky as blue as all the hope that’s pooling in those eyes
I believe that summer's comin’
I believe that summer's comin’
And I believe that you’ll find summer too
The dogwoods all are blooming the bees are on the case
In a sunny seaside village where you finally found some space
I believe that summer's comin’
I believe that summer's comin’
And I believe that you’ll find summer too
I believe that summer's comin’
I believe that summer's comin’
And I believe that summer’s comin’ soon
I believe it just has to
ALL EYES ON ME
Well the big one’s comin, we heard it in the mornin’ news
Everybody circlin’ round me now, askin’ what we’re gonna do
All eyes on me
All eyes on me
All the sharks are circlin’ round and round
All eyes on me
Oh my nearly beloved you have gathered to me once again
Been seein’ on your faces for a while now that you’re anxious for a better plan
I believe its in this envelope that I’m clutchin’ in my tremorin’ hand
I’m gonna open up the message now and I’ll read it to you if I can
All eyes on me
All eyes on me
I’m gonna got-to choke the message down
All eyes on me
Hold on to your drinks now
This might send you reelin’
See the ceiling’s cavin’ in
Crushed by secondhand feelings
Jaws of life are crashing shut
Sharpened teeth for the feeding
“Some things just can’t be saved”
These are the words I’m reading
I’m gonna do a trick now
A trick that you have never seen
I’m gonna disappear now
Become a cloud of steam
Rise up to the rafters
Ro settle there in the seams
Some of it is gonna fall like dew,
The rest will just float like cream
A little for your coffee now,
The remainder for your memories
All eyes on me
All eyes on me
I’m gonna do a trick now
All eyes on me
I’m gonna disappear now
All eyes on me
HYMN OF THE EARLY RISER
Alone on awakening
Just me and a downpour
The highways now all clean
The driest of the wells
All now recharging
And the foxgloves thriving
The sun could be out by noon
And all of the promise
And all the potential
In sixteen hours
What can you do?
And all of the promise
And all the potential
In sixteen hours
Make this world new
Alone on awakening
Just me and a landslide
I am brought down again
And each of worms of the earth
Are lost on the pavement
And the rainbows are all there too
Imprisoned ‘til they’re summoned by the sun
And all of the promise
And all the potential
Just sixteen hours
What can I do?
And all of the promise
And all the potential
Just sixteen hours
Make myself new
The highways now all clean
Sun’ll be out by noon
What else can I do?
Make myself all new
